NY Art Book Fair 2011

It's this time of the year.
Books, books, and more books. fun.

This year Victor will be talking at the NY Art Book Fair on :

Sep.30th, Friday 11am-12:30pm
"Furthering the Critical Dialogue"

Oct. 1st, Saturday 11am-12:30pm
"Focus on Latin America: Artists’ Books in Havana, Mexico City, and Caracas"

He is also going to be signing his books on Sep 30th 6pm- at the lobby of MOMA PS1.

今年も NY Art Book Fair の時期がやってきました。
本に埋もれる週末、楽しみです。

今年はビクター・シラが上記２つのパネルディスカッションに参加します。
個人的にはベネズエラのアートブックについて話す１０月１日（土）午前１１時〜のイベントがおすすめです。
南米のアートブックは注目されつつあるのでとても興味深いトークになると思います。

その他、９月３０日の午後６時〜は MOMA PS1 のロビーでサイン会も行われるのでそれも併せてぜひ！

This catalog is a collection of Jimmy and Carolina Alcock who visited around Mérida in Venezuela to look for artisan chairs, benches and fabrics.(ponchos etc.) The collection includes the works from a weaver, sculptor and an architect Juan Félix Sánchez (16 May 1900 - 18 April 1997) whose mostly known for building the Chapel of San Rafael de Mucuchíes.(Left picture above)

この本はジミー＆カロリーナ・アルコック夫妻がベネズエラのメリダ地方で自ら探し集めた職人たちによるイスやベンチ、織り物（主にポンチョ）をまとめたものです。
２００８年の８月には首都カラカスでショーも行われ、その際にこのカタログが作成されました。
コレクションの中にはThe Chapel of San Rafael de Mucuchíesを建てた事でも有名な建築家、織り手、そして彫刻家のJuan Félix Sånchez (1900年5月16日ー1997年4月18日）の作品も含まれており、展示された約７７点がこのカタログで紹介されていています。

第二の故郷 Second Hometown

幼少時代を過ごしたコネチカット州にいつものようにまた行ってきました。
ポラロイド片手に歩くと、懐かしさの中にも新鮮さがあって
改めてこの場所は自分にとって過去と現在とが共存しているんだな、と思いました。

今まで何十回と訪れてきたこの土地を何故今になってふと撮りたい、と
思いたったのかはよく分からないけれど、
いつでも行ける距離にあるからこそ見落としがちなもの達を
今日は見落としたくなかったんだと思います。

他の人にはなんの変哲もない場所でも自分にとってはなんかキラキラしている。
そういうトコをきっとふるさとっていうのかもしれないな、なんて考えながら
シャッターを切りました。また撮る、絶対に。

I did the usual trip up to CT where I spent my childhood but this time with my polaroid camera.
It made me see things from a different angle in a familiar environment and
again realize how my past and present coexist in this neighborhood.

There is no particular reason why I decided to photograph Connecticut this time,
but I guess I didn't want to let things go that are always there while I'm up there.
An ordinary neighborhood turns a bit special when you have childhood memories and that's probably where you call it a hometown. (Furusato)

STANCE PUNKSのベーシスト川崎テツシと、アーティストSiozooのコラボユニット。
テツシが弾き語りを歌い終える３０分の間にSiozooが編み物を完成させて、
その日来てくれたお客さん一人にプレゼントするというもの。

Collaboration with STANCE PUNKS bassist Tetsushi Kawasaki and an artist Siozoo.
Siozoo knits an item while Tetsushi sings songs for half an hour and give the item to one person who came to the show that night.

Coffee with Ricky Powell

One afternoon in May, I had a coffee with the street photographer Ricky Powell.
I wanted to say thank you for his warm support for participating the WA photo auction but instead, he gave me his latest book with the word,
"To Shiori, You have a bright future. It's obvious. Stay up, Ricky Powell"

Thanks a double, Ricky.

５月のある午後、８０年代からNYで活躍している写真家リッキー・パウエル氏とコーヒーを飲みました。
目的は WA フォトオークションへのサポートのお礼だったのですが、逆に彼の最新本を貰ってしまった。
そこにはこんなお言葉が。

「詩織へ、君の未来は明るい。それはあきらかだ。がんばれ。リッキーパウエル」

大々感謝です。リッキー、ありがとう。

WA project poster

The WA Photo Auction on 4/21 (Thurs) in NYC had 250+ attendees and raised $16,500 for Architecture for Humanity's relief work in Japan!

４月２１日（木）に行われた WAフォトオークションは来場者数２５０人以上、合計１６，５００ドル(約１３５万円）もの義援金が集まりました。全額Archtecture for Humanityへ寄付され、今回の東北関東大震災の被災地の再建にまわされます。

We made this poster to show our appreciation to everyone who supported us.
このポスターは関わった全ての方々への感謝のしるしとして作りました。

Beautiful indigo color is as known as "Hiroshige Blue"

His last haiku,

"I leave my brush in the East

歌川広重（寛政9年（1797年） - 安政5年9月6日（1858年10月12日）
浮世絵師。
鮮やかな藍色は世界で『ヒロシゲブルー』としても知られている。
